Warmer weather has finally arrived in NYC and we cannot wait to get out enjoy the various parks in the city. On nice days, we head out to the park and prepare a picnic basket so we can spend the entire afternoon outside. Now that Rio is born, I thought it would be a great idea to pack up a few snacks and activities we could enjoy in the 80 degree weather during our first family outing.
Rio is a little too small to appreciate these sunny days (it is recommended that infants should not use sunscreen for the first 6 months), but LS loves outdoor time after being inside all winter. During the summer months my first concern is of course sun protection and staying hydrated. The sun can be really damaging and it’s important for me to use products that are naturally sourced and contain no chemicals. Did you know unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays in as little as 15 minutes? That’s why we love using AVEENO® Baby Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50. LS suffered from a horrible sunburn last summer at summer camp so I always apply sunscreen before we leave the house. I love a good sunscreen that is non-greasy because there is nothing worse than feeling greasy when it’s hot outside!
Here is a list of things (besides food) that I usually bring with me on picnics to make things fun.
- Beads and string to make bracelets
- Arts & crafts
- Board games
- Polaroid Camera( LS Loves taking photos)
- soccer ball/beach ball
All of these items are great for families to do together and keeps things interesting so your little one won’t get bored. Don’t forget to find a good spot in the shade and always use a sunhat and sunscreen even in the shade. Happy sunny days!
