Menswear is having a moment in women’s fashion right now. Masculine pieces collided with women’s fashion in a big way in the 1980s during the era of power suits, shoulder pads, and larger than life hair. And wham! It’s back. (Menswear, not the band Wham!). I’ve got the big hair covered, but I wanted to play off the reemerging men’s trend so I snagged a few key pieces and fused them with my personal style.
Three of my favorite menswear trends right now are:
Check out how I put my own style spin on them below!
Sometimes the best place to find cool vintage pieces is in your relatives’ closets. I swiped this blazer from my aunt before hopping on the plane to LA, and I really don’t want to give it back, but she knows where I live. It’s an authentic 80s blazer complete with shoulder pads and the checkered pattern that is everywhere this season. I styled this structured blazer with relaxed, light wash jeans and a mustard yellow mock neck top for a little contrast. My staple white bootie and a pair of retro circle lenses had me feeling like I just stepped out of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” music video.

For my second look, I styled the same menswear-inspired checkered pattern on the bottom this time. This pleated skort totally makes me feel like I’m in a British punk rock band. I decided to style it with a Star Wars graphic tee to mix the highbrow plaid pattern with a spunky print. If you recognize this shirt, it might be because your nephew wore it to his middle school dance. No, I’m serious…I got this from the boys’ section, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. It also happens to be on sale now, in case you’re in the market for a rad tee and are unafraid to stylistically compete with ten-year-olds. I tossed my essentials into my Louis Vuitton Kimono Bag (yes I did mix a designer bag with preteen goods). Finally, I threw on this newsboy cap that you could not pay me to stop wearing and rocked the shades and white boots once again.

I hope you’re digging the menswear trend as much as I am this season! Remember there are no rules in fashion, whether you shop in the women’s department, the boy’s section, or your Aunt’s closet. It’s all fair game as long as you rock it.
