Brrrr…am I right?
It’s been especially chilly in the city lately. In fact, it’s been so cold that I can no longer dash from my office to my house around the corner without bundling up like Randy from A Christmas Story. “I can’t put my arms down!”
I’ve been stocking up on winter clothes lately and really adding to my coat collection. There are so many new trends happening in outerwear, which is great because my coat has become my uniform. You’ve got to splurge on a few coats that you’ll actually want to wear when the city turns into an arctic tundra so that you don’t wind up having to step inside a coffee shop on every block just to stay warm. I’m not saying that’s happened to me. But I’m also not saying it hasn’t.
The fur jacket is most definitely having a moment right now, and I decided to get a longer version that reads more like a winter coat. Wearing this sassy cheetah coat around NY gives new meaning to the phrase “concrete jungle.” I should mention that it’s from H&M and totally affordable. I decided to create a Lower East Side hipster vibe by adding some retro sunnies. The rest of my look is essentially neutral because the jacket print is so…wild. I paired it with black skinny jeans and a cream striped sweater (similar here). Finally, I took my newest shoe acquisition for a test run. I bought these Golden Goose sneaks the other day on the Upper East Side, and I couldn’t wait to pair the casual red shoes with my glam cheetah coat. I grabbed my red YSL shoulder bag to sling over my shoulder for another red pop. Playing with contrast is always an adventure.

Tips for Styling Animal Print Outerwear
Play with color
If you wear neutrals under your coat, go for a bold shoe or bright accessory. Red is often a good choice.
When styling an oversized coat that packs volume, choose a slim silhouette on the bottom to balance it out. A long coat goes best with skinny jeans, but you could wear a shorter coat with flares or a maxi skirt for a playful look.
When in doubt, do denim
An animal print coat, your favorite pair of jeans, and a white blouse is a ready-made recipe for a chic look.
Hey, if you’re going to wear a feisty patterned coat, you might as well have some fun with the details. Leather gloves, dark Audrey sunglasses, or a Parisian necktie, will really make you feel like royalty.
Keep it cool while keeping warm this winter! Happy styling.
