Street carts doling out hot dogs, pizza on every corner, and bakeries selling everything bagels. When you think about chowing down in the Big Apple, you probably think of the typical New York fare. But as an ingredient-savvy vegetarian who happens to love food, these NY staples don’t quite cut it when I want to go out to dinner. If you like to eat fresh, whole ingredients in pleasant settings with good lighting, you’re in luck because so do I! I wanted to compile a list of my favorite vegetarian spots in the city for all you herbivores that want plates that make your taste buds dance and are somehow good for you.
This is a vegan restaurant that boosts plant-based, Non-GMO menu options in a modern space. Ingredients are sourced from small and family farms so you know you’re getting fresh, organic foods prepared with expertise. I’m a huge fan of the roasted cauliflower and the mushroom walnut bolognese seems too good to be true.
I’m a huge fan of this vegan spot because again, it offers plant-based, nourishing foods that make you feel good and are also delicious. The menu options are so tantalizing it’s hard to believe they’re healthy! I mean the guac burger, quinoa taco salad, and matcha kelp noodles? Amazing.
This vegan refuge has a small menu, but when everything is delicious, less is more. Avant Garden offers toasts, cold options, and warm plates, with the menu ranging from cremini mushroom toast to homemade pappardelle pasta.
Popcorn Beets, Zucchini Pancakes, and Brussel Sprout Tacos. A vegetarian going to Dirt Candy for dinner is a treat equivalent to a kid walking into a candy shop. The menu makes eating vegetables seem like a fun treat. They also offer a five-course or ten-course dinner option for a fixed price if you’re really looking to veg out with the restaurants greatest hits.
Head down to Greenwich Village for lunch or weekend brunch, vegetarian style. The menu has unexpected combinations that you wouldn’t think of whipping up in your own kitchen like the bamboo rice stir fry and delicata squash and mushroom dumplings.
You guessed it. A vegan and vegetarian sushi spot that offers gourmet roll combinations you’ve never even heard of like the Green Machine (four-grain rice, cucumber, asparagus, charred edamame Sauce: Almond pesto). They also have rice paper wraps, noodle salads, and creamy soups.
This spot describes its menu as “vegan comfort food” and I’m not really sure I could put it better. From the Mushroom Brie Burger to the Tofu Fish and Chips, this place will leave your belly full and send you on your way to siesta.
For all my plant eaters, I hope this list helps you decide where to grab food next time you’re in a restaurant slump. The only question you’ll be left with is, “what do I order?”
