This winter has been especially harsh on my skin. These are five tactics I use to battle the elements and keep my skin hydrated and clear.

As we head towards mid-March, the promise of spring is in the air along with the coveted prospect of shedding layers, baring more skin, and spending time outside without shivering. Winters often seem interminable in a city where walking is required if you need to go somewhere. If you live in a climate anything like my native New York, you’re probably no stranger to cracked hands, chapped lips, and dry face syndrome. These are all traces that winter leaves in its wake to prove it was here. Although skin care should be a year-round priority, after a brutal winter some serious skincare therapy is often in order.
I wanted to share my five favorite ways to achieve radiant, hydrated skin on the blog today. Whether you feel weathered by months of cold weather or just want to work harder at taking care of your body, here are a few ways to show your skin some love. Let’s swap dry and cracked in favor of moisturized and dewy, shall we?
Every girl needs a moisturizer in her skin care regimen to truly infuse the skin with moisturizing ingredients. Olay recently released their Olay Whips collection, offering three hydrating moisturizers that use Active Rush Technology to release 1000x their weight in hydration and active ingredients. My favorite part about this line is that the moisturizer nourishes your skin while feeling lightweight instead of heavy like traditional creams. My favorite is the Olay Luminous Whip which focuses on reducing pore size while evening skin tone and enhancing radiance. I apply it in the morning before putting on my makeup and in the evening after cleansing my face. Since I’ve started using the cream, I’ve noticed my skin is less prone to irritation from the weather and elements! When I wake up in the morning, it looks brighter and even whereas before it was a bit dull and occasionally splotchy. I’ve started going without foundation more often because I feel confident without it! This is a great product if you feel your skin tone could use a boost of radiance or if you struggle with uneven skin tone.

Use a Humidifier
Cool, dry air sucks the moisture and the glow out of your skin (eek!). Humidifiers infuse the air with moisture, restoring hydration to your skin while softening it. I have a humidifier that I turn on in the evening to hydrate my skin at night to hydrate and plump up my skin. It’s relaxing too! An added bonus.
Make Homemade Face Masks
I always liked to make at-home face masks with my mini for mommy-daughter bonding. Then I started realizing how wonderful the mixtures made my skin feel afterward, and now it doubles as a fun way to bonding while also showing my skin some love. Oatmeal is great for your skin and usually in your pantry anyway. Combine ½ cup hot water with ⅓ cup oatmeal. Wait two minutes and then add 2 tbsp plain yogurt, 2 tbsp honey, and 1 egg white. Slather the mixture on your face for 10-15 minutes, embrace smelling like somebody’s breakfast, and then rinse off with warm water. Enjoy the supple, nourished feeling of your skin.
Use Paraffin Wax
Paraffin wax is a soft, mineral wax that has a low enough melting point for safely submerging skin. The wax increases blood flow and relaxes muscles all while softening skin. It’s used as a form of therapy to treat conditions such as arthritis and tendonitis, but can also be treatment simply for skin care. I love heading to the salon for a paraffin wax treatment when my hands feel rough. I’ll submerge wax my hands, elbows or feet in a tub full of the warm wax, and when they peel off the wax, my skin feels silky smooth.
Drink Tons of Water
You’ve been told a thousand times. Drink water and plenty of it. Our bodies are over 50% water so when we deplete them of hydration, our skin suffers from dryness and dullness. Always carry a water bottle with you and work up to drinking 8 cups a day. You’ll start to notice a difference in your skin tone as well as the way your body feels overall.
