If you added us on snapchat then you most likely know that I have an obsession with bulletproof coffee. After a month of research and a friend of mine persuading me to try it, I finally did! Let’s just say that a morning doesn’t go by without me enjoying a cup. So what the hell is this stuff, that’s probably what you’re thinking. Well let me break it down and see if I spark your interest.
Bulletproof Coffee is a coffee drink consisting of non-toxic black coffee blended with grass-fed butter and Brain Octane oil. I know it sounds gross but it taste delicious! Originally you are supposed to brew the coffee but I will be honest, I don’t have time for that. I purchased their upgraded coffee k-cups for my Keurig machine. I like easy, no-fuss mornings so these little cups are ideal.
You will need grass-feed butter and brain Octane oil. The brain octane oil is a pure coconut MCT oil that provides fast energy with no crashing. It speeds up your metabolism and I find that it actually helps you focus. It’s tasteless and odorless. I was skeptical at first but I literally didn’t crash all day and I was so alert. You can add this oil to smoothies, tea, salad dressings, etc. The possibilities are endless!
The grass-feed butter is full of high quality fats and nutrients. Studies have shown butyrate (found in the butter) protects against mental illness, improves body composition, increases metabolism, and improves gut health! I used Ghee which is a superfood butter commonly used in India. It can withstand high heat which means it’s great for cooking with and is loaded with vitamins such as viatmin D, K2 and E. The color resembles a bright sunny yellow which signifies that the cows are healthy and grass feed. Most store-bought butter lacks color which is a sign that it’s coming from a sick depleted cow. (gross right?)
Now that you know a few facts, this is how I make it and what you need:
What you need:
- Bullet Proof upgraded Cartridges
- Brain Octane Oil
- Organic Ghee (I also saute veggies with Ghee)
- Vitamix or blender
- Pop an upgraded coffee cup into your keurig and brew or you can brew your coffee the original way.
- Add in 1-2 tablespoons of Brain Octane to the hot coffee (It’s STRONG – start with 1 tsp. and work up over several days).
- Add 1-2 tablespoons grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee (I use ghee)
- Mix it all in a blender for 20-30 seconds until it is frothy like a foamy latte (You have to mix it in a blender and not with a spoon).
I personally do not add sugar to my coffee but I do add fresh almond milk sweetened with dates and vanilla bean that I make myself. You can get that recipe here.
*Do not use salted butter or store-bought butter. It does not have the same effect and it’s not a good fat.
